Hard vs. Soft Water: What’s the Difference?
Hard water gets its name from containing greater amounts of dissolved calcium, magnesium, and other minerals, whereas soft water has smaller amounts. Often, the type of water you have is affected by your property’s location, with different regions of the country experiencing different levels of water hardness.
While hard water is not bad for your health, it can be frustrating to deal with. For example, it can leave mineral deposits on your dishes, inside of your plumbing, and even on your hair and skin when you take a shower. It can also take longer to clean household items, as soap scum is formed when soap reacts with the higher level of calcium in the water.
Alternatively, when you’re washing items with soft water, they’re easier to clean due to less soap scum. Dishes will not appear as cloudy as they sometimes do when washed with harder water, and your pipes won’t experience a buildup of mineral scale. If your house has hard water, you can easily convert it into soft water with the help of a water softener. There are a variety of benefits to having soft water in your home.

Learn More About Our Water Softening Systems
Softener systems can make a huge difference for how you experience the water in your home. Here’s how they work. Softener systems feature two connected tanks: a water softener tank and a brine tank. Your house’s water line supplies water to the softener tank, which is lined with resin beads. In a process called ion exchange, these negatively charged beads attract the positively charged mineral deposits in the water, pulling them away from the rest of the water. The resulting soft water is then available for use throughout your house.
After a while, the resin beads will be too coated to attract more mineral deposits, and the tank must be cleaned. This regeneration process consists of salt water from the brine tank entering the softener tank and rinsing the mineral deposits off of the resin beads. This water is then disposed, and the system returns to softening your water.
Another way to soften the water in your home is by using an electronic water conditioning system. Rather than using salt, these electronic systems use electricity to create a magnetic field, which water flows through as it enters your house. This magnetic field alters the water’s chemistry and prevents mineral deposits from forming scaling inside the pipes and in other areas of your home.
The system that’s best for you will depend on your specific water filtration and water purification needs.
